Alinma Becomes First PCI DSS 1.2.1 Certified Bank in Saudi Arabia

10 Jumada I 1431 H - 24 April 2010 G

Alinma Bank has obtained the global Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard 1.2.1 (PCI DSS 1.2.1) certification, becoming the first Saudi bank and one of the first banks in the Middle East to do so. The certification affirms Alinma's adherence to international security standards related to the protection of banking card information.

The certification process was audited by Control Case, a specialized auditor approved by the Board of Information Security Standards for Banking Cards. Control Case's audit was extensive and tested the information systems and networks at Alinma Bank to ensure the application and implementation of information security solutions.

A detailed review of all related documents and business procedures within the bank was also performed. Additionally, the organization performed interviews with key bank staff and made field visits to ensure that all certification requirements had been met.

Mr. Ibrahim Al-Sayyari, General Manager of Information Technology at the bank, emphasized that receipt of the certification was yet another indication of the tireless efforts put forth by Alinma to fulfill its strategic vision. This vision, he said, includes providing exceptional banking services to partners (customers) with the highest degree of security and continually striving to implement the latest information security systems.

Al-Sayyari added that becoming the first Saudi Bank to be PCI DSS1.2.1 certified should strengthen Alinma's partners’ confidence in the bank and would serve as motivation for the bank to continue the pursuit of information security excellence.

He also noted that the certification confirmed the efficiency and quality of information systems, policies, standards and security procedures applied in the bank, including the structure of information technology and the infrastructure owned by the bank.

It is worth noting that PCI DSS 1.2.1 certification is considered a global standard for measuring the best established practices in maintaining security information. It is granted to banks and corporations that pass the audit process in accordance with the required standards.

During 2009, Alinma Bank won several awards and international certificates, including the Insights award for the best call center technology in the Middle East, ISO 27001 certification for information security of internet banking services and the award for the best financing deal in the field of energy in the Middle East in 2009. All of this was achieved despite the fact that the bank was in the early stages of development, having only launched official operations in the third quarter of 2009. Alinma sees this as an indication that it's strategy and infrastructure have been built on solid foundations that signal the emergence of a modern bank that will contribute significantly to the national economy in the coming years.
